Radically Different Improvised Theater

Picture

Praise from Oregon Arts Watch:

From new dramatic forms, to teaching philosophy, to administrative structure and beyond, Deep End Theater is revolutionary theater in all aspects. Led by the indomitable Domeka Parker, this Portland ensemble is changing the perception of what improv is capable of.

Raising Coen is Deep End’s newest improvised play, based on the Coen Brothers’ movies. It is a remarkable piece of long form improv that triumphantly traverses the realm of what we normally think of as Theater with a capital T.  After all, aren’t we tired of going
to comedy clubs and laughing halfheartedly at impatient displays of wit and cheap punchlines? We don’t often feel irrefutable pathos, genuine suspense, or palpable horror, do we?

Well, Deep End Theater, which opened in May 2017 in Southeast Portland’s Buckman neighborhood, is no comedy club." - Christopher Gonzalez

 More About Us...

Deep End strives to be a safe space. Each improv jam will begin with participants stating any personal boundaries or injuries they may have at that time to ensure their safety onstage. Boundaries will be honored and will not be mocked. You may speak up if you feel unsafe at any point during your time onstage or in our space. You may reach out to the host, staff, or a Deep End ensemble member if you wish to do this privately.
We believe in free speech, but malicious content directed towards marginalized groups of people will not be tolerated. At any point, the host, staff, or ensemble has the right to pause or blackout an act or scene if they believe the Deep End code of conduct is not being honored. These moments will be handled firmly and compassionately. Though your intentions may be innocent, it is still possible your impact may be harmful.

Something cool about Deep End...

Deep End Theater is excited to announce the official formation of a unique collaboration we are calling Four Corners Collective, including representation from Paper Street Theatre Co. in Victoria, B.C., Deep End Theater in Portland, Oregon, The Kinkonauts in Calgary, Alberta, and BullSkit Comedy in Red Deer, Alberta.

We are not a business partnership or a merger, but we are sister-companies dedicated to making ourselves and each other better.  We want to make public and official our deep commitment to one another as friends, companies, and community members. Representative Artistic Directors, Dave Morris, Domeka Parker, Owen Chan, and Jenna Goldade commit to sharing resources such as Codes of Conduct, HR policies, company operating systems, ensemble expectations, training programs and styles, lessons learned, challenges to overcome, and future goals.

We are unique companies with different ideas, goals and styles, but what we have in common is a deep belief that improvisational [theater/theatre] is an art and craft deserving of inspired, careful, compassionate, and passionate leadership. We aim to hold each other accountable to our own artistic, as well as diversity and equity, goals and promise support one another in reaching them.

We are excited to share this announcement with you in the hopes that this project will inspire other like-minded people to connect throughout the improv community around the world.

Taking classes at Deep End opened my eyes (and ears) to communication tools I didn't even know I needed. Not only has class opened doors for me into the world of improv, it's given me new techniques for navigating the world around me."
